Let’s start at the beginning
We arrived in Sydney after 13 days on the road and were quite exhausted. It wasn’t a long distance drive for the last day, but we had to complete several tasks. And not being able to check in with our hostel didn’t make things any easier for us.
Wait, is this really our hostel?
After sleeping in a camper van for almost two weeks, we were looking forward to get in a nice, cozy room with proper beds – one for each of us. We booked our stay at The Village Hostel in Sydney, not far from the town center. When it comes to NYE in Sydney, Hostel prices explode months before the big fireworks even happen, and we paid about AUD 1000 to stay there – 3 people, 3 nights, in a 4 bed dorm ( >110 AUD per person and night). We accepted the fact, that money is made when it can be made, and paid for it. What we didn’t know was the fact that the management doesn’t care about its guests. The hostel features super-small rooms,
dirty disgustingly dirty bathrooms and a no refund policy. Yes, we paid everything upfront (that was part of the deal). But when we requested a refund we got the following information. Due to the fact that we paid everything upfront, they can’t refund any money. We understand that with NYE things are busy, but not so busy that you somehow forget to schedule someone to take care of the bathrooms (for more than 36 hours).
at the Opera House / the Harbour Bridge / in the middle of the city
We had a relaxed 31st of December exploring Sydney. It was awesome to be back in a buzzing city after being on the road for 2 weeks. People were lining up in different parts of the city and waiting for the big firework at midnight (some have been waiting for more than 24 hours to get a great place!).
We got ourselves some sparkling drinks 😉 and went into the city to get at least a glance at part of the fireworks. We have been successful and saw the 12-minutes long spectacle amidst skyscrapers and celebrating people 🙂 On the first day of 2018 we continued checking out the city before we had a nice dinner to finish off the 1st day of the new year with style.
Yes, another early morning flight
As the headline says we had to catch our UBER to the airport pretty early as we headed off to our next stop: Melbourne. Our flight was at 7:00am which meant that we had to leave the hostel shortly after 5:00am to get to the airport in time. Sydney is a beautiful city with many different aspects and we look forward to coming back in the (not so distant) future! 🙂
